Welcome to the Movement!

The National Federation of the Blind of New Mexico (NFBNM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit made up of blind people of all ages, their families and friends. Our members and leaders provide advocacy and support to blind and visually impaired New Mexicans across our great state. We work together to promote full participation and integration of blind people in all areas of life, and we serve as an advocate for change when equal access and treatment of the blind is denied.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower the blind and visually-impaired people of New Mexico to achieve their highest potential. We believe that with proper training and encouragement, a blind person can be gainfully employed in the career of their choice, raise a family, participate in community clubs and other organizations, and in all ways enjoy life to the fullest. We accomplish our mission by:

  • Educating the public about blindness and the abilities of blind people.
  • Providing support and resources to blind individuals and their families.
  • Advocating on behalf of blind individuals in a variety of areas, including special education, vocational rehabilitation, independent living, and assistive technology.
  • Providing assistance to parents to obtain appropriate special education services and instruction for blind children, including instruction in Braille.
  • Advocating with local and state government to promote the rights of blind people.
  • Advocating on behalf of blind seniors who are losing vision due to conditions such as macular degeneration.
  • Addressing issues of concern to persons who are blind or visually impaired who have conditions such as Retinopathy of prematurity, septo-optic dysplasia, Cortical visual Impairment, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Bringing blind people together to work toward a common purpose.
  • Collaborating with other organizations to achieve our common goals.

Live the Life you Want

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.

The newly-blind person faces some difficult challenges. One of the best ways to meet these challenges is to meet other blind people and learn about the techniques they use. Membership in the NFB provides this common meeting ground and a sense of participation and restoration of confidence. Through speeches, pamphlets, and radio and TV appearances, members of the NFB work to educate the public that the blind are normal individuals who can compete on terms of equality.
